RIAA Files Lawsuits Against AI Music Platforms for Copyright Infringement

Major record labels, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Records, have initiated legal action against AI-generated music platforms Suno and Udio, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuits, announced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), target Suno AI in Boston and Udio AI’s developer, Uncharted Labs, in New York federal courts.

According to RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier, these lawsuits underscore concerns that AI platforms like Suno and Udio are exploiting the creative works of artists ranging from Chuck Berry to Mariah Carey without permission or compensation. Glazier emphasized that while the music industry supports responsible AI development, unauthorized services that profit from unauthorized use of artists’ work hinder genuine innovation in AI.

In response to the allegations, Suno AI CEO Mikey Shulman stated that their technology is designed to create entirely new music compositions and does not replicate existing content or reference specific artists. Shulman expressed frustration, noting that attempts to clarify their approach with labels were met with legal action rather than constructive dialogue.

The lawsuits reflect ongoing debates within the music industry about the ethical and legal implications of AI-generated content. Earlier legislative efforts in states like Tennessee have sought to protect musicians and songwriters from unauthorized use of their creative output by AI tools. Over 200 artists have also voiced concerns through the Artist Rights Alliance, urging tech companies to respect the rights and value of human creativity in the face of advancing AI technologies.
