Today, bolstered by substantial backing from the United States, Kenyan forces participating in the Multinational Security Support mission have arrived in Haiti, marking the commencement of an initiative aimed at bringing much-needed relief to the Haitian population. In recent times, rampant gang violence has inflicted casualties upon thousands of Haitians, including children, women, and men, and has displaced over half a million individuals. Gender-based violence has also become pervasive, exacerbated by gangs obstructing access to critical resources, leaving nearly five million Haitians grappling with severe food insecurity.
The people of Haiti deserve to reside in safety, forge better futures for their families, and cherish democratic freedoms. The country’s trajectory hinges on reinstating democratic governance. While achieving these objectives may not be immediate, this mission represents the most promising avenue to pursue them.
This initiative will assist the Haitian National Police in intensifying anti-gang operations, enhancing their ability to uphold public safety, and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in dire need. Crucially, together with Kenya and other partners, we have integrated vital accountability and oversight measures into the mission.
I extend my admiration and heartfelt gratitude to all nations that have pledged personnel and financial support to this mission, which will grow to encompass 2,500 multinational personnel. Led by Kenya, contributors include Benin, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Algeria, Canada, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The United States, as the largest financial supporter, has committed over $300 million and up to $60 million in equipment. Furthermore, we will continue diplomatic efforts to encourage additional countries to join this endeavor, underscoring Haiti’s significance to its neighbors, the region, and the world.
Haiti is an exceptional nation, and its people, like all people, deserve security, opportunity, and liberty. We cherish the contributions of Haitian immigrants and Haitian Americans. The United States remains steadfast in providing substantial assistance in security, humanitarian aid, and economic development, including strong backing for trade preferences with Haiti under my Administration.
