Brooklyn, NY — A  federal lawsuit has emerged, shedding light on an incident involving an NYPD officer, David Barker, who allegedly shot a man unjustifiably near Mayor Eric Adams’ residence in 2022.

September 29, 2022, during heightened police activity in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood following an earlier shooting, Shahid Woodstock was walking near the scene. Two individuals, including Officer Barker, approached Woodstock. Without warning, Barker fired two shots, hitting Woodstock once in the leg and nearly missing his head.

Despite Woodstock wearing different clothing than the suspect description, he was treated as a suspect in the earlier shooting, arrested, and hospitalized. Subsequent investigations never linked Woodstock to the original shooting incident. He was charged with illegal possession for two guns found during a search of his apartment that took place after the incident, according to the suit. Woodstock pleaded guilty, according to his Attorney Kaishian. He’s currently doing time in an upstate prison. Woodstock filed a federal lawsuit last week, alleging that Barker’s actions were unjustified.

The lawsuit names several defendants, including Mayor Eric Adams, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, and other involved NYPD personnel. Woodstock seeks unspecified financial damages, claiming that his rights were violated. The suit alleges that Woodstock feared for his life as he was shot trying to get into his apartment building.

Tiffanie Narinesammy, a pregnant woman living in the same apartment building, alleges that the stress from witnessing the incident caused her to deliver a stillborn baby six weeks later. Another resident who tried to assist Woodstock after he was shot was also arrested and held for over 24 hours without being charged.
