Tragedy Strikes: Toddler Drowns in North Phoenix Pool

On July 2, 2024, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in north Phoenix when a toddler fell into the family swimming pool. The child was discovered by officers responding to a call at a residence near 29th Avenue and Villa Maria Drive. Despite immediate emergency care, the toddler’s injuries proved fatal, and the child tragically lost their life.

The victim in this incident has been identified as 1-year-old Zion Rodgers. No arrests have been made and this incident continues to be investigated by detectives.

Drowning is a significant risk for young children, especially toddlers. In fact, it is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children aged 1 to 4. The fence should be at least 4 feet high, with no openings under it or between slats wider than 4 inches. A self-closing and self-latching gate is essential to prevent unsupervised access.
  3. Remove Hazards: Empty containers like buckets, tubs, and kiddie pools immediately after use. Store them upside down and out of children’s reach.
  4. Stay Alert: Always keep an eye on the weather and be aware of currents if you’re near natural bodies of water.
