Meriwether County is an excellent option for prospective homeowners seeking an off-grid Georgia area. This Georgia county, home to around 21,000 people, is rich in natural resources and has a robust agricultural economy.
According to the county website, its history began when Native Americans used the county’s roads as trade routes and its natural springs as a source of healing. Currently, the region has about $33 million worth of real estate and land for sale, and it is full of ranches, hunting land, and rural homes.

Although there are just 12,000 people living in Bienville Parish County, Louisiana, there are plenty of woods and bodies of water for those searching for a different lifestyle.
Bienville Parish, which bills itself as a “hunting and fishing paradise” and a “prime for weekend getaway,” is well-known for its camping scene. Some of the more well-known locations include Lake Bistineau, Kepler Creek Lake, The Mill Creek Reservoir, and Saline Lake. These areas are covered in cottages and lodges that are hidden behind the debris of hardwood woods.
Only 5,375 homes make up the very tiny town in the northwest county. But be prepared for some gawkers—this is the location of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde shooting.

Wasco County, which is conveniently close to Portland, the bustling metropolis, won the top place for off-grid living. Census data shows that although the sweeping county is 2,381 square miles in size, its population is only 26,670. Living there is incredibly calm because there are only around 11 people per square mile.

Hot Springs County, which is almost a thousand miles distant, has the second-lowest population in the state, with only 4,621 people living there. The location, which is entirely encircled by mountains, further isolates the little village.
Considering that Hot Springs County had housed the nation’s largest municipality, the remoteness is almost ironic. Gebo, a mining town founded in 1907, is now a ghost town with a cemetery and a few hauntingly remaining structures. 2,000 people previously lived there.
Nonetheless, the southern part of the BigHorn Basin, the Wind River Canyon, the Shoshone National Forest, and the county’s eponymous Hot Springs State Park are all accessible to Hot Springs County inhabitants today.
