Surprise Police Identify Suspect in Domestic Violence Incident

Surprise, AZ (October 21, 2024) — A domestic violence incident in Surprise led to the swift identification and arrest of a suspect following a distress call from a neighbor. Officers from the Surprise Police Department responded to a report at approximately 7:30 a.m. on October 19, 2024, after witnessing a man dragging a woman by her hair into a residence near Greenway and Dysart roads.

Upon arrival, officers announced their presence and heard the woman screaming for help from inside the home. Gaining entry, they discovered a man physically assaulting the victim. To subdue the suspect, officers deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds, successfully halting the attack.

The victim sustained multiple injuries, including lacerations and contusions, and was transported to a local hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. Nearby, officers found several knives, indicating the severity of the situation.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Garrett Headrick, was booked at the Maricopa County Intake and Release Jail on multiple charges, including:

  • Attempted First-Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Assault (multiple counts)
  • Kidnapping
  • Threatening
  • Unlawful Imprisonment
  • Disorderly Conduct (five counts)

Investigators revealed that Headrick traveled from California to confront the victim, who is the mother of his child. He reportedly waited outside her home before the violent confrontation.

Headrick is being held on a substantial bond of $1,500,000.00.
