Remembering Marian Robinson: The Rock of the Obama Family

Marian Lois Shields Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, was a figure of strength and inspiration for her family. Born on July 29, 1937, in Chicago’s South Side, she passed away on May 31, 2024. Her life was a testament to resilience, wisdom, and love, and her legacy continues to inspire.

Early Life

Marian grew up in a small house with seven siblings in a deeply segregated Chicago. She married Fraser Robinson III, a pump operator for Chicago’s water department, in 1960. They had two children – Craig in 1962 and Michelle two years later.

A Pillar of Strength

Marian worked as a secretary and for a bank before becoming a stay-at-home mother. She and Fraser worked hard to ensure their children could go to some of the best schools in the country. Despite Fraser being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, they took out secret loans to afford the school fees. Marian once expressed their aspirations for their children, saying they wanted them to understand that a good education was their key to a better life.

The First Grandma

When her son-in-law, Barack Obama, won the 2008 presidential election, Marian became known to Americans as the country’s first grandmother. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 2009 to live in the White House residence and help take care of her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha. She once shared in an interview that her decision to move to D.C. was driven by her concerns for her daughter and son-in-law’s safety and her grandkids.

A Legacy of Love

Marian Robinson was a fixture in the White House during Barack Obama’s eight years in office, though she kept a low profile. She attended holiday events, the occasional overseas trip, and concerts in the East Room. But most often she was with her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia.

Michelle Obama often spoke of her mother as her rock and her best friend, a guiding light throughout her life. Following her death, the former president paid tribute in a statement to the extraordinary gift of her life.

Michelle Obama’s relationship with her mother was one of deep respect, admiration, and love. Marian Robinson’s influence and support played a significant role in shaping Michelle into the influential figure she is today. Marian was described by Michelle as a sweet, witty companion who doesn’t need the limelight. This privacy, tightly guarded by the Obamas, allowed Marian to live relatively freely in the White House without the usual scrutiny that follows every first family, while still enjoying the perks of being the president’s mother-in-law.

In 2019, Barack Obama said: “I’ve always appreciated her steadiness, her perspective, and the way a wisecrack from her reverberates around the room”. This statement highlights the profound impact Marian had on the Obama family.

Marian Robinson’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and dedication. She was a beacon of strength for her family and an inspiration to many. Her legacy will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those she touched.
