Israel’s Netanyahu returning home early from US after deadly attack

Washington(dpa) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is cutting his visit to the United States short and returning to Israel in the wake of an attack that left 10 young people dead.

Netanyahu’s office said had been briefed on the attack in the town of Majdal Shams, in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Israeli military blames the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon for a wave of rocket fire. It said one rocket hit Majdal Shams. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the deaths.

“Immediately upon learning of the disaster in Majdal Shams, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed that his return to Israel be brought forward as quickly as possible,” said a post on X from Netanyahu’s office.

Netanyahu has been in the US since Monday to shore up support for his war against Hamas in Gaza. He met both candidates for the election in November: Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump.
