On July 18, 2024, detectives launched an investigation into a shooting that occurred in front of an apartment complex parking lot in South Phoenix. The incident resulted in the death of a 16-year-old female, Yadira Duarte Rodriguez, and left two others injured.
Around 7:30 pm, officers responded to a call near 7th Avenue and Alta Vista Road. They discovered Yadira Duarte Rodriguez suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts by the fire department, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
Later that evening, two additional victims arrived at a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The man and woman provided information linking them to the Alta Vista Road shooting.
According to preliminary findings, Rodriguez met the man and woman at the apartment complex. During their encounter, she attempted to rob them at gunpoint. A struggle ensued, leading to the man gaining access to a firearm and shooting Rodriguez. Both the man and woman sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation.
Homicide detectives are actively processing evidence from the scene. The man and woman were released after consulting with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. A charging decision will be made once the investigation concludes.
