Driver Charged in Crash Involving Tucson Police Officer

In a tragic turn of events, a young man has been charged in connection with a car crash that claimed the life of an on-duty Tucson police officer, Officer Adam Buckner, two months ago. The incident, which occurred on March 31 near the University of Arizona campus, has left the Tucson community reeling with grief and grappling with the loss of one of its dedicated law enforcement officers.

Authorities announced that 20-year-old Nicholas William Skitzki is facing a misdemeanor charge of death by a moving violation, along with two civil traffic infractions for failure to yield while turning left at an intersection and failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle. Skitzki was cited and released on April 24, with his arraignment scheduled for May 7 in Tucson City Court.

According to police reports, Officer Buckner, 31, was responding to an emergency call with his siren on and lights flashing, indicating he had the right of way. Tragically, a sedan driven by Skitzki failed to yield while making a turn, resulting in a collision that sent Officer Buckner’s patrol car careening into a traffic signal pole. Despite efforts to save him, Officer Buckner succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Officer Buckner’s untimely death marks a profound loss for the Tucson Police Department and the community at large. He joined the force in 2021 and served as the lead officer for the city’s midtown district, demonstrating dedication and commitment to his duties. Prior to his tenure with the Tucson Police Department, Officer Buckner began his law enforcement career with the New Orleans Police Department in 2017, eventually rising to the rank of detective.

The tragic incident has reignited discussions about road safety and the importance of obeying traffic laws, especially when emergency vehicles are present. It serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers each day as they work to protect and serve their communities.

Questions linger about accountability and justice for Officer Buckner and his loved ones. While nothing can undo the pain of his loss, the charges against Skitzki signal a step toward accountability and closure for those affected by this devastating tragedy.

The Tucson community mourns the loss of Officer Adam Buckner, honoring his memory and legacy of service as they come together to support his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
