One person was killed and several others were hurt Saturday morning when a driver suspected of being impaired crashed into a group of more than 40 cyclists in North Carolina, authorities said, according to CBS News.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a black Infiniti was heading west on a road in Wake County a little after 9:30 a.m. Eastern time when it crossed the center line and hit the cyclists, who were riding east.
The driver did not stop, troopers said, but kept going for about half a mile before crashing into a ditch.
Holly Springs Fire Chief LeRoy Smith said seven people were taken to a hospital with major injuries and 15 others had minor injuries. The highway patrol put the number of injured at about a dozen.
Troopers identified the person killed as 63-year-old Patrick Allen Turner of Cary.
The driver, 76-year-old Donald Robert Morris-Jones of Apex, was arrested on charges including felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death, reckless driving and driving while impaired. The charges are allegations.
People at the scene told Smith the cyclists were part of a group that regularly meets for weekend rides.
