PHOENIX — Democrats kept Arizona’s three highest offices Tuesday as Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes won reelection alongside Gov. Katie Hobbs, according to projections by The Associated Press reported by KTAR News.
The AP called both races just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. Mayes defeated Republican state Senate President Warren Petersen, while Fontes beat Republican state lawmaker Alexander Kolodin. As of 5 a.m., Fontes led Kolodin 54.9% to 43.7%, KTAR reported.
Mayes, a former Republican, campaigned on consumer protection cases, including lawsuits against corporate landlords and a Saudi-owned farm accused of over-pumping groundwater. Her office sued the Trump administration dozens of times, which she said protected $2.3 billion in federal money for Arizona.
Petersen, backed by major police unions, had accused Mayes of politicizing the office. Mayes questioned his legal experience, noting he passed the bar in 2020.
Fontes, a former Maricopa County recorder, defended Arizona’s election system during the campaign. Kolodin, whom President Donald Trump praised at an October rally in Bullhead City, sponsored Proposition 144, a voter ID measure that was trailing narrowly early Wednesday.
Further down the ballot, Democrat Nick Mansour led Republican Elijah Norton 55.6% to 44.4% in the treasurer’s race as of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Arizona’s Family reported. A win would make him Arizona’s first Democratic treasurer since Bob Kennedy left office in 1967.
In the race for superintendent of public instruction, Democrat Teresa Ruiz took the lead over Republican Kimberly Yee as votes came in, FOX 10 reported. That race had not been called.
