SUN CITY — Maricopa County sheriff’s detectives are using cell phone and vehicle data to pin down where a congressional candidate says she was sexually assaulted in August, Sheriff Jerry Sheridan said.
Bernadette Greene-Placentia reported that she was fixing campaign signs near 99th Avenue and Bell Road in Sun City on Aug. 14 when she was hit in the head and knocked unconscious while walking back to her vehicle, Arizona’s Family reported. She said she woke up being held down and assaulted by two men.
“Understandably, the victim has limited recollection of the events, which has presented investigators with challenges in narrowing down the location,” Sheridan said in a statement Friday. “Based on the information currently available, the potential area spans from the vicinity of 99th Avenue and Bell Road north toward the Anthem community.”
Detectives have canvassed the area for surveillance video and other evidence, the sheriff said.
“Investigations involving circumstances of this nature can be particularly complex and sensitive,” Sheridan said, adding that establishing a timeline and location requires “a methodical approach.”
Sheridan said further details are being withheld to protect the case. “This investigation remains open and active, and we will continue working toward establishing the facts and bringing this case to a resolution,” he said.
