PHOENIX — A 2-year-old boy died Saturday night after he was pulled from a backyard pool in Phoenix, authorities said.

Phoenix firefighters were called to a home near 67th Avenue and Baseline Road around 9:45 p.m. for a reported drowning, KTAR News reported.

Crews found the boy unconscious and not breathing after he had been pulled from the pool. Family members said he had been underwater for an unknown amount of time.

Firefighters performed lifesaving measures and took the boy to a hospital in critical condition. He later died.

Preliminary information indicated there was no pool fence at the home, according to authorities.

Water safety advocates remind parents that drownings can happen in seconds and urge families to use pool fences, keep constant eyes on children near water and learn CPR.
