USPS Says No Valley Facility Closed After Recorder Heap Warns of Mail Ballot Delays

An absentee ballot

PHOENIX — The U.S. Postal Service says it has not closed any Valley processing facilities, after Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap warned that mail ballots could be delayed, KTAR News reported.

At a Sept. 30 Board of Supervisors meeting, Heap said voters should expect delays because the post office had closed its central Phoenix facility and mail was being routed through San Diego.

A USPS spokesperson told KTAR it has not closed any Valley processing facilities and has “more than enough capacity” for Maricopa County election mail. Early ballots went out Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Supervisor Thomas Galvin said on KTAR’s The Mike Broomhead Show that he didn’t know whether Heap was “lying” or “mistaken” and called on him to correct the record.

Heap did not specify which facility he meant, and his office did not respond to KTAR’s request for clarification.

Election Day is Nov. 3.
