MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers survived a tense ninth inning to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night, the Associated Press reported.
The game appeared over when Tampa Bay’s Liam Hicks hit into a double play, but a replay review found Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s foot was slightly off second base. Closer Trevor Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to end it.
Christian Yelich’s RBI triple sparked a two-run first inning that put Milwaukee ahead for good. Jacob Misiorowski gave up one run over five innings for the win, and catcher William Contreras threw out two would-be base stealers.
It was Milwaukee’s first World Series game since 1982. Neither franchise has won a title, making this the first Fall Classic between two potential first-time champions since 1980.
Game 1 winners have gone on to win the series about 63% of the time.
