Medicare Open Enrollment Is Here: Fewer Advantage Plans and Possible Drug Cost Changes

Medicare’s annual open enrollment period is underway and runs through Dec. 7, and some enrollees will need to shop for new coverage, ABC News reported.

About 35 million people are in Medicare Advantage, the privately run alternative to traditional Medicare. A KFF analysis found the average beneficiary can choose from 35 Advantage plans in 2027, down from 39 this year, as insurers trim offerings.

Some prescription drug costs may rise after the Trump administration ended a temporary subsidy program, though the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services projects average drug premiums in Medicare Advantage will fall more than 30%.

During open enrollment, people can switch between traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage or change drug plans.
