Maricopa County Begins Counting More Than 220,000 Early Ballots

PHOENIX — Maricopa County election workers have started tabulating early ballots for the Nov. 3 election, with more than 220,000 ready for tabulation as of Tuesday morning, ABC15 reported.

Workers open each envelope and separate it from the ballot to keep the voter’s identity confidential before feeding ballots into tabulation machines. Representatives of both major parties oversee many steps, and much of the work can be watched on the county’s public livestream.

“We have to have a community that has confidence in their election system,” said Jennifer Liewer, a deputy elections director for the county.

In Mesa, the county justice center on Javelina is the only 24-hour ballot drop-off site, and 22 voting locations will open in the city on Election Day.
