PHOENIX — Drivers crossing the Valley this weekend face one of the season’s busiest freeway work packages, with the Arizona Department of Transportation closing or narrowing multiple corridors from Friday night through early Monday.
According to ADOT’s Oct. 2–5 weekend travel advisory, westbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria) closes between 51st and 75th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, with related ramp shutdowns at 27th and 35th avenues and from Interstate 17. Westbound Loop 202 (Santan) closes between Arizona Avenue and Loop 101 (Price) on the same overnight window, with on-ramp closures at Gilbert, Cooper and McQueen roads. Detours cite Union Hills, Pecos and Germann roads.
Northbound State Route 51 shuts between Interstate 10 and Indian School Road starting 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday for pavement work, with surface-street detours on 16th, 24th or 32nd streets. Westbound Loop 303 closes between I-17 and 43rd Avenue for bridge construction, while southbound Loop 101 (Pima) is narrowed in segments near McKellips–Red Mountain and Princess Drive/Pima Road–Shea Boulevard. South of the Valley, SR 347 drops to one lane each way between Casa Blanca Road and Mammoth Way north of Maricopa for paving.
ADOT noted that most projects are funded in part by Proposition 400, the Maricopa County transportation sales tax voters extended via Proposition 479 in November 2024. Real-time conditions are available at AZ511.gov, the az511 app or by dialing 511.
With Friday night’s kickoff already under way, ADOT urged motorists to leave early, follow posted detours and expect intermittent ramp closures even where full freeway lanes stay open.
