Secret Service Director Resigns After Trump Assassination Attempt

The Director of the Secret Service resigned on Tuesday amidst mounting criticism over security failures during the recent assassination attempt on former President Trump. Kimberly Cheatle, who had faced increasing pressure from both Democratic and Republican quarters to step down, announced her decision in an email to staff, taking full responsibility for the security lapse.

“In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director,” Cheatle wrote.

Cheatle’s resignation came after a startling revelation that local authorities had observed and photographed the assailant who shot at Trump just 18 minutes before the former president appeared at a rally in Pennsylvania. This incident was one of several security breaches discussed during a congressional hearing described by Cheatle as the agency’s most significant operational failure in decades.

In a letter addressed to Secret Service staff, Cheatle acknowledged the series of lapses that led to the shooting but emphasized that these events do not define the agency. “As I’ve stated, the Secret Service will move forward with our investigatory and protective mission in a steadfast manner. We do not retreat from challenge,” she wrote, while also urging that her resignation not overshadow the agency’s ongoing work.

Following Cheatle’s resignation, Ronald L. Rowe, Jr., a veteran with 24 years of service in the Secret Service, was appointed as acting director by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas. Mayorkas expressed gratitude for Rowe’s willingness to lead the agency during what he termed an incredibly challenging moment, as investigations continue into the events of July 13 and the Secret Service cooperates with congressional oversight.
