Phoenix Cold Case Breakthrough: Arrest Made in Elena Lasswell Murder After 20 Years

Phoenix, Arizona — Exactly 20 years after the brutal killing of 15-year-old Elena Lasswell, a major breakthrough has occurred in the case. Phoenix Police Cold Case Detectives have arrested 37-year-old Sergio Reyes, who was extradited from Mexico and booked into Maricopa County Jail on several violent felony charges.

On July 10, 2004, officers responded to a house in the neighborhood of 2700 North 21st Drive. There, they found Elena Lasswell with fatal injuries. Despite emergency efforts, she did not survive. The case initially yielded no suspects, and detectives turned to the community for support through Silent Witness.

In 2012, Cold Case Detectives utilized advanced DNA collection techniques, leading to the identification of a profile that matched Sergio Reyes. DNA evidence confirmed Reyes as the lead suspect. However, he was living in Mexico at the time. In 2014, a Maricopa County Grand Jury indicted Reyes, triggering the extradition process.

Now, exactly two decades later, on July 10, 2024, Sergio Reyes faces charges related to sexual assault and first-degree murder. The arrest marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Elena Lasswell and her grieving family.

The case serves as a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and the enduring hope that justice can prevail even after many years. As the trial unfolds, the community remains vigilant, honoring Elena’s memory and seeking closure for a tragedy that haunted them for two decades.
