New details have emerged regarding the tragic encounter between a driver and an Arizona DPS trooper on Loop 101, shedding light on the events leading to the fatal shooting.
Authorities have confirmed that the deceased individual involved in the barricade situation was a man, although his identity has not been publicly released at this time.
The incident unfolded around 2:00 am on Sunday, when a DPS trooper spotted a vehicle parked on the shoulder of Loop 101 south of University Drive. The vehicle matched the description of a car reported for erratic driving earlier in the evening.
Sergeant Eric Andrews of the DPS provided insight into the trooper’s approach, stating that the trooper attempted to engage in dialogue with the driver in an effort to de-escalate the situation. Despite clear instructions from the trooper, the driver refused to comply and barricaded himself inside the vehicle.
After approximately 30 minutes of standoff, the situation escalated when the driver allegedly brandished a handgun. In response, the trooper discharged their weapon, resulting in the driver’s death at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the altercation.
The incident prompted the closure of southbound lanes of Loop 101 near Rio Salado Parkway for nearly 12 hours, causing significant traffic disruptions until the road reopened shortly after 1:00 pm.
