Scottsdale Police Detective Ryan So Dies in Tragic Accident

Scottsdale police detective died after an accidental rifle discharge near the Scottsdale Airport, officials confirmed late Friday night.

In a news release issued at 11 p.m., Scottsdale police provided additional information into the death of Detective Ryan So that happened TScottsdale Police Detective Ryan So died Thursday, June 13, after sustaining duty-related injuries.

Detective So honorably served the city of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Police Department for 9 years, ending his watch as a dedicated member of the Special Assignments Unit. 

This is an unimaginable tragedy for both Ryan’s family and his police family at SPD. Please keep Detective So’s loved ones and colleagues in your thoughts as they cope with this very sudden loss.

Detective So, a Navy veteran, is survived by his wife and three children.

Police say that after the completion of serving “a search warrant and arrest operation” around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, detectives from the Special Assignment Unit were unloading equipment from a vehicle near 78th Street and Greenway Road. Det. So was reportedly moving a bag containing a rifle, which fell to the ground and discharged when it hit the pavement.

Det. So was struck by the round and fellow detectives immediately rendered aid. He was taken to a hospital, but did not survive.
