3 months before election Biden Announces Return of Americans Wrongfully Detained in Russia After Diplomatic Breakthrough

Today marks a significant moment as three American citizens and one American green-card holder, previously imprisoned in Russia, are finally coming home: Paul Whelan, Evan Gershkovich, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza.

This achievement represents a major diplomatic success. In total, we have secured the release of 16 individuals from Russia, including five Germans and seven Russian political prisoners who had been unjustly detained in their own country. Many of these individuals have endured years of wrongful imprisonment and profound hardship. Today, their suffering has ended.

I extend my deepest gratitude to our allies who supported us through the challenging and intricate negotiations, including Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, and Turkey. This successful outcome underscores the importance of maintaining strong and reliable international partnerships. Our alliances play a crucial role in enhancing the safety of Americans.

Let me be unequivocal: I will continue to fight until every American who has been wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad is reunited with their family. My Administration has already secured the return of over 70 such Americans, many of whom were held before I assumed office. Despite these efforts, too many families remain separated from their loved ones. As President, reuniting these families remains my highest priority.

Today, we celebrate the return of Paul, Evan, Alsu, and Vladimir and share in the joy of their families. We also remember those still held unjustly around the world and reaffirm our commitment to their families: We see you. We stand with you. And we will persist in our efforts to bring your loved ones home where they belong.
